Abstract Uses empirical models to evaluate precision of estimates of natural mortality rate (M) for Patagonian toothfish off southern coast of Chile and in waters around South Georgia. Compares with estimates obtained for age classes and analytical model. Growth parameters and size at first maturity are used to assess error in input parameters, in order to then incorporate prediction error when computing variance in estimates. Estimates of M were very imprecise, with variation coefficients between 41-60%, and confidence limits of 95% fluctuating between 0.04 and 0.39 yr-1. Median of estimates ranged between 0.1 and 0.14 yr-1 and were close to average M of 0.11 yr-1 obtained per age classes. Recommends using M=0.1 yr-1 for stock assessment models applied to this resource.
